“The solution to the problem of the day is the awakening of the consciousness of humanity to the divinity within.” Hazrat Inayat Khan
After four years of keeping a gratitude journal, I discovered another life-changing book: Wayne Dyer's "There's a Spiritual Solution to Every Problem." Hoping to understand what life was trying to teach me, I decided to give it a try.
The title made a big claim, but the opening quote - "The solution to the problem of the day is the awakening of the consciousness of humanity to the divinity within" – drew me in. I wanted to understand and experience what it meant, so I grabbed my pen and journal and dove in.
The first thing I noticed was that Dyer’s idea of the “divinity within” meant God, but was somewhat different from the superhuman, judgmental, all-seeing figure I was introduced to in my childhood church – one who rewarded those who obeyed him and punished those who did not. And since I was born in sin, I always wondered if I had a chance with this God.
But Dyer described God as spirit, invisible energy, the source of everything that exists, and tapping into this divine source could help us solve any problems. I liked this idea of a God who, being invisible, cannot judge or show favoritism. This made the book’s principles worth exploring further.
Reading “There's a Spiritual Solution to Every Problem” led me to other books about God as an innate spirit, books that gradually reshaped my thinking, helped me better understand human behavior, and encouraged me to confront unresolved adolescent issues that followed me into adulthood - issues I tried to escape, which only made things worse.
What I discovered was a quiet awakening unlike anything I had experienced before – not just a burst of inspiration from a Sunday sermon or song that tanked by Monday. No, this was a rousing feeling that I could tap into any day of the week.
For over twenty years, I’ve tapped into the “divinity within” to solve problems, big and small. That’s why the small change Wholistic Approach to Wellness begins with the Spiritual Dimension of Wellness.
So many chronic illnesses stem from our disconnection from our inner source, and this spiritual disconnection affects every aspect of our well-being. Next week, I’ll share examples of how often this occurs.
In the meantime, what’s your “go-to” problem-solving solution? What helps you stay well? I’d love to hear your thoughts! Remember, as long as we’re alive, there will be challenges to face and problems to solve. Feel free to share with me at smallchange@myrtlerussell.com.
