“Reading without thinking will confuse you. Thinking without reading will place you in danger.” Confucius.
Books are the most sacred things I own; treasured because there is power in words. I read to learn, and if I don’t get the lesson on the first read, I can always revisit - it's what I love about books. When life is uncertain, books are my refuge - always here, waiting, offering gentle guidance and pointing me in the right direction.
One thing I learned decades ago, during one of my lowest points, was to set my intentions for the day with inspirational reading. It's now a cherished part of my morning ritual, second only to my gratitude list. And a delightful thing I’ve discovered is that after reading a page or two by my favorite writers, I always find new things to appreciate. A few minutes of motivational reading not only get me off to a good start – they also grow my gratitude list and remind me of the abundance all around me.
Starting your day with this simple 9-minute dose of inspiration can spark a powerful ripple effect that shapes the rest of the day and supports your overall well-being.
Here are 9 additional benefits: one for every minute you spend reading:
1. Sets Your Mental Tone for the day: Inspirational reading is about choosing the thoughts that dominate your mindset rather than letting external circumstances dictate your mood.
2. Inspires Creative Momentum: Starting with something uplifting generates what psychologists call "positive affect" – a state that enhances creativity, resilience, and better problem-solving abilities throughout the day.
3. Establishes a healthy Self-Care Routine: Taking a few intentional minutes for yourself signals that your well-being is a priority.
4. Reduces Stress: Inspirational reading is significantly less stressful than diving into the news, emails, or social media, which almost always trigger anxiety and overwhelm.
5. Increases Optimism: Inspirational reading makes it easier to notice positive possibilities in your own life.
6. Shifts Perspective: It exposes you to different viewpoints and experiences, helping you see your own challenges in a new light.
7. Builds Resources: Over time, inspirational quotes, stories, and ideas become resources you can draw upon during difficult moments.
8. It only costs you a few minutes of your time: It's a small investment that compounds throughout your waking hours.
9. Good Habit Formation: The consistency of this daily 9-minute practice is a habit that benefits every dimension of wellness!
I read books that offer a dose of encouragement, fresh perspectives, connection to my innate divine power, and relate to universal human experiences.
What morning rituals do you have? What kind of energy do you bring to each day? You might be surprised to see how such a small change can change the course of your day. But first you have to try it.
Be inspired; Be Well!
